Is the iPhone 17 getting a powerful 50W fast charging upgrade?
Apple has always been quite stingy when it comes to iPhone charging speeds.
Compared to the standard 100W fast charging on Android phones, iPhone charging speeds have long been locked at around 20W.
Speaking of which, there have been repeated rumors in recent years about new iPhones getting fast charging upgrades.
Every year, leaks often mention fast charging speeds.
For example, last year, rumors circulated that the iPhone 16 series would be upgraded to 35W fast charging.
Although subsequent testing showed that the iPhone 16 Pro Max could briefly reach 33W-39W charging speeds at peak power,
most of the time, the new phone's charging power is limited to around 27W.
With time passing, there's only about a month left until the official release of the new iPhone.
Recently, news that the iPhone 17 series will feature upgraded fast charging specifications has been revealed, living up to expectations.
Unlike previous reports, the source of this news seems relatively reliable.
Recently, Taiwan's NCC certification website revealed that Apple is actively promoting the next-generation Qi 2.2 wireless charging standard.
This standard, developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), is an upgrade based on the Qi 2.1 specification.
At the same time, Apple also submitted two wireless chargers supporting the Qi 2.2 standard to the certification website.
The product models are A3503 and A3502, both of which are MagSafe chargers.
These two chargers support up to 50W charging power.
Compared to the 15W maximum limit of Qi 2, this upgrade is quite significant.
In terms of compatibility, the new MagSafe charging is compatible with a wide range of models, including the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 16.
This also aligns with the previously leaked list of iOS 26-compatible models.
This may mean that the increased wireless charging power will be based on a software upgrade, corresponding to Apple's long-rumored AI power-saving feature.
Thus, the rumors of a fast-charging upgrade for this year's new iPhone are likely more than just a lie.
With the increase in wireless charging speed, the maximum power of wired charging should also see an upgrade.
For users who prioritize iPhone battery life, this year might be a good time to look forward to it.
Having discussed charging, let's take a look at the recently leaked specifications of the iPhone 17.
Sources have revealed the hardware configuration of the base model of the iPhone 17. The base model will support a 120Hz refresh rate, but will not feature the ProMotion adaptive refresh rate feature.
In terms of design, the iPhone 17 will retain the appearance of the iPhone 16, making it the only model in the series with an unchanged design.
In terms of imaging, the iPhone 17's rear camera will still feature a 48-megapixel resolution, while the front camera is expected to be upgraded to 24 megapixels for the first time.
As for the processor, the base model of the iPhone 17 will likely mirror the previous generation, still equipped with the A18 chip.
This means that, at least in terms of hardware performance, the entry-level iPhone 17 will not see a significant upgrade.
In contrast, Apple is quietly developing the A20 chip.
According to renowned analyst @Jeff Pu, the A20 chip will be featured in the iPhone 18 Pro series to be released next year.
The A20 will utilize TSMC's 2nm process technology, resulting in a 15% performance improvement and a 30% reduction in power consumption.
If the news is true, this will be a major leap forward in iPhone processor performance in recent years.
The above are the main recent leaks about the new iPhone. What are your thoughts?
